Tucson News and Notes - Sue Franklin

In November, the team welcomed newest member, Sara Rumbaugh to her first meeting. Linda Laird provided continuing education by reviewing her extensive collection of fabrics. She included woven fabrics that were solid, checked, plaid, and striped. The stripes and plaids included some very old, circa 1860, while the others ranged from 1880-1920.

 

Her prints included florals with some wide ombres circa 1830-1860 and others from as recently as century later. The geometrics were fun and included dots, circles, stars, commas, and eccentrics, ranging from 1860 to the 1960s. Linda freely shared her knowledge as she reviewed those as well as some shirtings, feedsacks (fabric must have the "holes" on the edge), and mourning prints. She also had examples of cheater cloth; something commonly used today as well as in the middle of the 19th century.

 

Sara was oriented to the documentation process and also aided experienced members in documenting four quilts. These included Sue's sister Carla's 60th Birthday quilt, a nine patch and redwork piece; Rachel's friend Gloria's quilt The Girls (they even wore earrings), Terry's appliquéd and trapunto Daisy medallion quilt that she purchased on eBay; and finally, Kate's 1939 Nosegay, a quilt made from blocks her mother made when she was 16 years old. Kate found the patches during a move and decided to put them together and then complete the quilt.

If you'd like to just come to watch and view the process; that is possible, too. Training sessions are held monthly from 9:30 until 12:30 at the Ellie Towne Flowing Wells Community Center on Ruthrauff Road.

What's happening!

On November 10, Lynn Miller trained a marvelous group of ladies from the Pebble Creek Quilters.  She was so very impressed with their work ethic. Fun, fun group. They will make a wonderful addition to our Arizona Quilt Documentation Project.  They documented 6 quilts.

Also on the 10th, Linda Laird gave a presentation on the history of printed fabrics to the Tucson group.

Welcome!

The Arizona Quilt Documentation Project blog is up and running!  We are still a work in progress.  Let us know what you would like to see here.

We have a link to the documentation forms you can use to document your own quilts and submit them for inclusion on the Quilt Index.

We will also keep you posted on public documentation days, if you prefer to take your quilts in to be documented by one of our regional groups.
